This happen when the wood expands and contracts with changes in the weather. When this happens moisture is allowed to get in behind the wood where it is porous and it wicks it up. When this happens you are on the road to moisture damage and soft wood. The answer is caulking and recaulking every so many years dpending on th quality of the caulk. Caulking prevents the moisture from getting in and causing problem.
